She studies the intersectionality of race and gender in computing. She served as a co-principal investigator on the student program, leading the implementation for the New York schools (The Young Women’s Leadership Schools of Astoria and of the Bronx).

Angela DeHart

Ms. DeHart is an award-winning science teacher who founded STEM Impressionists, an organization that mentors Black girls and other girls of color through after-school STEM learning and experiences. Ms. DeHart served as an instructor for the BRIGHT-CS student program in Arlington, Virginia.

Dr. Egenreider, a science educator and director of Thinkabit Lab, is focused on teacher and student development and training. He served as a co-principal investigator for the student program, offering summer camps in 2019 and 2020 to the Arlington-based girls in the program.

Ms. Hankerson is a research manager at the Center for Democracy and Technology and an advocate for improving technology access to expand individual rights and ensure that more people share in the benefits of technological progress. She served as a mentor in the student program in Arlington, Virginia.

Ms. James is a computer scientist and software developer. She has a passion for mentoring Black girls and other girls of color and served as an instructor for the BRIGHT-CS student program in Arlington, Virginia.

James Michael Reed

Mr. Reed is an electrical engineer and computer scientist (systems engineer). He worked on education technology with elementary and middle school students while at the University of Michigan. He served as a curriculum developer for the BRIGHT-CS student program and served as a mentor in the student program in Arlington, Virginia.

Ryoko Yamaguchi

Principle Investigator, Research Scientist, University of North Carolina Greensboro

Dr. Yamaguchi has 30 years of experience in K-12 education supporting culturally and linguistically diverse students as a teacher, researcher, parent leader, and advocate. Her unique expertise is in utilizing, explaining, and communicating research, data, and the junction of policy, practice, and research to a wide audience. She conceptualized the CS learning ecosystem of BRIGHT-CS and led the student program, the implementation for the Arlington, Virginia schools, and the school equity and educator professional development projects.
