Teach Computer Science

Computational thinking and computer science are ubiquitous. Students use technology all of the time, whether through their phones, video games, TV, or computers they use to learn. But computational thinking and computer science are also in every job, from doctors using technology and robots to save lives, business leaders using data to track trends and sales, to architects and engineers using 3-D modeling to design and build safe buildings.

And yet, there is very little diversity in who takes computer science classes, with barriers from access (some students may be in schools that do not offer CS classes), opportunities (some students may not take CS classes for a variety of reasons), and success (some students may not receive the supports they need to thrive, especially when the learning environment is chilly).

To better support students to engage in and learn computer science, BRIGHT-CS created a CS learning ecosystem. It is not a one-off hackathon or coding camp, where impacts can fade over time. Instead, BRIGHT-CS brings together a comprehensive set of in-school, afterschool, and summertime experiences that connect students, parents, schools, and community members to create an environment wherein culturally and linguistically diverse students are empowered to pursue their interests in computer science. Computer science and computational thinking are taught as tools for girls to access and expand their interests in fields applicable to CS/CT.

Teacher Resources

BRIGHT-CS creates a CS/CT learning ecosystem that uses a cohort model of positive peer and near-peer mentors among culturally and linguistically diverse students in computing with an emphasis on:

  • empowering and developing girls as leaders
  • providing comprehensive CS/CT experiences
  • building partnerships with schools, colleges/universities, and non-profit and community organizations to support culturally and linguistically diverse girls as they pursue opportunities to enrich their futures.
